Argument Composition and Linearization: Korean Complex Predicates and Scrambling

چکیده

This paper deals with the formation of complex predicates and some interesting scrambling facts in Korean. First, we extend the notion of complex predicates to include various noun-verb combinations by providing syntactic and semantic evidence. Within the HPSG framework, we then propose a general schema based on argument composition, which can be used for different types of complex predicates. Furthermore, in opposition to Chung (1998)’s approach using argument composition for scrambling phenomena, we argue that linearization constraint is better to account for various permutation possibilities in Korean.1

Naacl 2000 Submission Hhandling Some Diicult Problems in Morpho-syntactic Modeling of Korean Using Categorial Grammari

Korean Combinatory Categorial Grammar (KCCG) is an extended combinatory categorial grammar formalism that can capture the syntax and interpretation of the \relative free" word order, long distance scrambling and other characteristics of Korean. The KCCG formalism can uniformly handle word order variation among arguments and adjuncts within a clause as well as in complex clauses and across claus...

Syntactic Edges and Linearization

In this thesis, I investigate the question of how the units of a linguistic expression are linearly ordered in syntax. In particular, I examine interactions between locality conditions on movement and the mapping between syntax and phonology. I show that Cyclic Linearization of syntactic structure and constraints on domain-internal movement of multiple specifiers predict unique ordering restric...

The Interlanguage of Persian Learners of Italian: a Focus on Complex Predicates

This paper aims at investigating the acquisition of Italian complex predicates by native speakers of Persian. Complex predication is not as pervasive a phenomenon in Italian as it is in Persian. Yet Italian native speakers use complex predicates productively; spontaneous data show that Persian learners of Italian seem to be perfectly aware of Italian complex predicates and use this familiar fea...

The Composition of (Dis)Continuous Predicates: Lexical or Syntactic?

Recent lexicalist analyses of predicates expressed by syntactically independent elements, raise central questions concerning the domain in which such complex predicates are composed. Should they be composed in phrase structure or within the lexicon? We will argue that a demonstration of syntactic separability for pieces of complex predicates is independent of whether such predicates should be v...

Applicativizing Complex Predicates: a Case Study from Murrinh-patha

In this paper we give an analysis of Murrinh-Patha verbs as morphological complex predicates. We argue that the different parts of the complex predicate provide information for different layers of the argument structure; more precisely, that classifier stems determine the number of arguments a verbal complex takes while lexical stems contribute thematic information. We further show how the argu...
